In summary

Downing Golf Course is appreciated for its well-maintained grounds, challenging layout, and reasonable pricing, particularly for seniors. Many visitors commend the friendly staff and the course's accessibility, with amenities like electric carts and a driving range. However, some golfers express frustration with slow pace of play and inconsistent course conditions, such as hard tee boxes and poorly maintained greens.

Excellent public golf course! Use it weekly! Only problem is doesn't drain well when we have heavy rain.

We were pleasantly surprised with this course. Will definitely go back. Not much of a pro shop or clubhouse.

Course is in good shape for a public course. However speed of play is absolutely ridiculous and there is zero etiquette. I got my membership as this is my first year being retired I wish I wouldn't of. I play as a single mostly and your basically screwed. I grew up on these courses and was taught always to let the faster party play through. The geriatric generation of entitlement is beyond compare as these people treat it as their own private club...its not. 2 stars.

I didn’t golf the course, but I took my son to the Downing driving range today. We are both very amateur golfers, and honestly I had no idea what to expect because I’ve only been to one range across town. First of all, the employee working, Pete, was so nice and hospitable in so many ways. He was kind and gave my son kid’s clubs to hit with. He was friendly and courteous and I heard him with other golfers on the range and just seemed to be a nice person and great employee. The range itself is set up nice - spread out with some greens or you can go down further and practice chipping etc. obviou…

Won't be back. Was told by one employee over the phone one price and got charged more when I showed up. They stack tee times to close so finishing 18 is less than 3 hours isn't possible.

Loved this course! Great layout and the people working there are first rate. 10 out of 10 will come back.

Zero complaints about Downing. Live a half hour away and play here as much as I can anyway. The course is always well maintained, challenging but very playable at the same time. Carts are nice, refreshments easily accessible at the turn. Price is very reasonable. I shouldn't say I can't wait to be 55+ but the senior rate is excellent! I hate to write a review that helps make a place more crowded but I can't help it, you owe it to yourself to play Downing.

Very unprofessional. I made a tee time a day in advance, said that I would have my girlfriend with me just to spectate and not play and that was fine over the phone. I get there for my tee time, pay the fee and go to the putting greens where a man walks up and tells me she cannot golf with me. I offered to pay the greens fee for her and I still got a no. He offered to refund my fee and I said okay. It would have saved me a lot of time, and I would’ve had a tee time set somewhere else instead had I just been told no over the phone. Now today I don’t get to golf and we drove 25 minutes both way…

I've played Downing since I was a teenager. It hasn't changed much. Maybe not in as good of condition as it was 30 years ago, but for a muni track it's a solid four stars. It's also one of the best bargains around. Twilight rates are $22 to ride an only $12 to walk. With the prices of everything skyrocketing it's a heck of a bargain!

Longest course around. Great fairways. I've seen the greens in better shape than this past season. For $22, seniors (55 and over) get a golf cart and 18 holes. Long course and that's really all that makes it challenging. Well maintained. Love to play this course weekly.

Real nice course for the price. Noticed more bunkers on the back 9, may be due to the back 9 being newer. Course is long which is what I love about it. $28 for 18 holes can't beat it. Electric carts as well which I thought was a pleasant surprise.

The course itself is in good shape, but the place is very poorly run by the City of Erie and the staff is less than helpful. It gets very busy here and they have no ranger to ensure the pace of play remains timely. They sell beer here, but went here early summer of 2017 and their license was revoked, so best to call ahead and find out for sure if they are selling it that day or not.
