In summary

Zapata Ranch is widely praised for its stunning natural setting, exceptional staff, and outstanding food, making it a popular choice for those visiting the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, unique horseback riding experiences, and the opportunity to observe wildlife such as bison and elk. While the accommodations are generally well-received, some guests note that the rooms can be rustic and a bit pricey, but many feel the overall experience justifies the cost.

Just amazing, was there for 4 days and 3 nights with a great group of people. The food was great, we did horseback riding up to the dunes and buffalos. The wranglers that take you on a tour were all great! The photos speak for how beautiful the location is.

Sad this location closes at the end of 2024! Room we were in (Bison room) was clean, good size, great view, and a nice clawfoot tub to soak in. Service, staff, wranglers, and especially the food were very good. Location in terms of the dunes, hiking, Zapata falls, horseback riding were perfect. With nearly nothing for 30 min around you expect peace and quiet. Stars are amazing at the ranch, especially at the dunes either at night or morning while the moon isn’t out. Can’t say enough about the wranglers especially Riley, a consummate professional. An issue raised is the cost; HOWEVER, I broke d…

Wow. This place is absolutely unreal. We had such an amazing experience staying here during our three day trip to visit the Great Sanddunes National Park. The staff was generous, kind, and helpful. And the FOOD. Oh my goodness I can’t say enough. Each meal was incredible, and the ambiance was perfect. We would love to go back for a longer stay and the full ranch stay vacation!

Spent a night here while exploring the Great Sand Dunes area. Wish we could have stayed an extra night! The place is quiet and beautiful, very well kept, intimate, and relaxing. The staff are so attentive and friendly. Food is amazing! And we saw the most gorgeous sunset. Can’t say enough good things about this place.

A very beautiful ranch with a great team who took good care of us. The food was excellent, the room was well done and cared for and we absolutely loved the horses who took care of us both.

My wife works for The Nature Conservancy and since we were on a road trip to The Great Sand Dunes National Park, we stopped in to see the Zapata. Amazing buildings with incredible history. This is such a lovely part of Colorado that is often overlooked. The restaurant looks excellent and to stay at the ranch requires a 3-Day minimum visit.

We had a magical family vacation at Zapata. The staff, programs, food and setting are amazing. Highlights were riding through the Great Sand Dunes National Park, exploring the Medano ranch on horseback, fly fishing, encountering so much wildlife (bison, elk , deer, coyote, even pelicans) and hiking to Zapata Falls. Highly recommended!

Let me tell you about Zapata ranch. First off, I had to find it just by randomly clicking around on Google maps. I looked at the reviews and most of them were for the falls or campgrounds, which are not the same thing. Then I saw the rooms and wasn't overly impressed. But then my wife saw that the food was included, we were sold. We went in with not a ton of information and low expectations, but at least we would be fed. Let me tell you what. This place is wonderful! The room was fine, not much to talk about. But, the food was amazing. Eating a 5 course meal outside in the mountain air is an…

Awesome views. Great place to see a large Elk herd as well as free roaming Bison if youre lucky. Best bet is to view from POI off of hwy 150 which is also a short drive to the Great Sand Dunes but in clear view from anywhere on the ranch.

The view from our camp site was unbelievable! Great camp site host. Clean restroom and camp sites. The trip up was rough but definitely worth the drive. Side note: bring bug spray.
