In summary

Van Cortlandt Park Golf Club is praised for its historic charm, convenient location, and well-maintained course, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. The course layout is appreciated for its challenging tree-lined fairways and scenic setting. However, some players mention issues with slow pace of play, uneven tee boxes, and maintenance concerns, particularly during peak times and certain seasons.

• No special pass — but reserve a tee time: The course is public; you can play by booking tee times online (GolfNYC / GolfNow) and paying green fees at the gate or online. NYC resident rates are available with a permit. • Historic & iconic: Opened in 1895, Van Cortlandt is widely cited as the oldest public municipal golf course in the U.S. — a true piece of NYC golf history. • Easy transit access: It’s one of the city courses easiest to reach by subway — the 1 train (Van Cortlandt Park–242 St) is a short walk away. Great for riders without a car. • Course & facilities: An 18-hole public cou…

05-02-2026 It was beautiful day, and nice out before Summer hit. Nice fairways and nice greens. Faster than I thought. Never new this good golf course in NYC. Thank you, Mr. Frank. The ranger(starter) was very kind and gave good professional golf tips. Nice talking to you sir. 03-21-2026 Windy but sunny day!! First out 2026 Nice compact course with short yards but they have some challenges. I love 2 Par 5 distance over 600 yds. It is not perfect but some where near in NYC, this is very nice. I would come again~~ We had a fun day. Nice warm welcom at the club and restaurant.

Visiting one of my best friends in NYC so we decided to play a Sunday morning 630 slot. Great layout and well maintained course, really dangerous rough due to how thick the grass is (good luck finding your ball) but overall great Parkland circuit to appreciate both the game and the history behind it. Thanks for having me.

I played today, Tuesday, May 12th, and it was a great experience. Even though the course was packed, we finished in 4:30, which is a very good pace of play. The course is in excellent condition and the holes are really fun. I was a bit concerned about how many trees there are, but that actually gives you the chance to approach the holes in several different ways.

Challenging and narrow course with rich history. Babe Ruth’s locker is still in the clubhouse! All in all, the fairways were in solid condition and rough was moderately thick. Greens were in good condition, although very slow with a ton of unfixed divots. My only real gripe was the tee boxes and pace of play. Many of the tee boxes were bare (see photo). There was a ranger on hole 1 but they should patrol the course to keep play moving.

Maybe not the best golf course in the NYC. But still enjoy going to this spot. Easy drive from Manhattan and one of the only few places where you can get to via MTA.

I played Van Cortlandt while visiting New York and loved it. You can feel it's an older course, hard to explain how but it has that older vibe. Very pretty. Keeping your drives in the fairway is a must as trees line every hole. I really enjoyed this course and would love to play again if the opportunity arises.

3-4 stars depending on the day. I just played here on a Saturday. The course is quite challenging with the woods, but also not exactly a hard course in general. Most of the holes are tree-lined shock would make almost impossible to find any balls that miss the fairways. The pace of play is slow (we teed off 15 minutes late and the total round was 5.5 hours). I would definitely go back, but there’s definitely room for improvement too. The course itself is on par with a public/municipal. Some of the fairways are basically just rough and the greens are not well maintained, with crabgrass and lot…

This is a great place for special events! I celebrate my wife’s baby shower at this location and I’m thinking of having my wedding here also. The staff was very nice and helped many times without even being asked. We were taken well care of and every request we made was taken care of rapidly. There is a lake right by the deck and together with the trees and the changing seasons the location makes a perfect scene for beautiful photos.

The trees, the history, the changes in elevation were so enjoyable - Babe Ruth played here! We had to rent clubs, plus a cart but the rates for the tee times were great. Easy Uber from the Upper East Side. The sand traps were packed and the greens even harder (didn’t seem like grass). But Vanny was a cool experience.

As of 9/6/25 - Greens are punched, tee boxes are in terrible shape, pace was decent (about 4.5) and ranger was staying on top of it which is appreciated. If it weren’t for multiple short par 4s that people are waiting for greens to clear (our group did it too), could’ve been a solid 4 hour round. I’m new to NYC so $75+cart is wild for, frankly, not a nice track (w/punched greens to boot)… but from what I can tell, pretty short supply of public golf so I’m just glad I got 18 in under 5 hrs on a Saturday. Will *sigh* probably be back. Side note - would give 4 stars if not for aerated greens and…
